Welcome to Ann Saladino’s gallery of pastel paintings.
Understanding PastelsThe vibrancy and brilliance of color is what attracted me to the medium of pastels. While pastels look like bright sticks of chalk, they are essentially colored pigment held together with a binder. They range from hard to soft depending on the amount of binder used. The softest pastels can crumble easily with just a little pressure.
Pastel paintings are very fragile. The artwork created with this medium is little more than dust sitting on a surface. Therefore, pastels are applied to a paper with enough “tooth” to hold pigment as it is pressed onto the paper. Finished paintings must be framed under glass to protect the surface.
I hope you enjoy browsing my gallery.
